About Katherine (by Anne)

Once upon a time on College Hill, an alumni magazine editor named Dusty Rhodes (really) hired Katherine and me, then in our twenties. Between us, through the eight years we sweated over a zillion profiles, news articles, and features; we racked up writing awards; we became familiar fixtures on campus with our steno pads and nosy questions.

It was my good fortune and inspiration to work with Katherine. Her writing was bright and personable; it drew readers in and delivered astute insights about students, campus trends, alumni, and faculty. Personally, she was outgoing and generous. I can still hear her resounding “Hi!” when anyone walked near her office. She was the first to greet newbies and invite them to lunch. She had a big, fascinating family, and I loved hearing about their adventures and foibles.

Creative silliness was our off-hours brand: We were the late-night re-arrangers of names on the staff directory in the front foyer. We made birthday cards for everyone, complete with Katherine’s hilarious verses and my amateur (but possibly amusing) artwork. We kept a mental catalog of secret nicknames for campus and office characters. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life. (I’ve often wondered if our co-workers found us as funny.)

Thank the goddess that despite some time apart, we reconnected and found even more commonalities – as older adoptive mothers, as fierce liberals, and as somewhat cynical corporate editors. Now we’re both totally (me) or partially (her) retired. I’m so ready for this new chapter in our creative collaboration. Based on past performance, it’s safe to say we’ll deliver a blend of thoughtful discussion and relatable wit.
